    Too much angelic teenager here...

Maybe it's just the chaotic style, maybe it's just because I don't like angels and in particular the adolescent cursed ones but this book doesn't work at all...
I don't think I'll buy the next one.

    Daniel, the teenage Angel...

Don't get me wrong. I've read far worse books than this (Twilight for example) and so I can't really write a completely bad review. I read it to the end and this is a good start, I am thinking about reading the sequel (Torment) and this scares me a bit. But... let's talk about the book.

Luce, Lucinda, after a very mysterious accident involving her and the death of her high school boyfriend is sent to Sword & Cross, a sort of special school for difficult youth. Some of the kids have had issues with the law, other just seem disturbed, and then there are those who seem to come back every year, but no one knows much about them. Luce, a former popular girl in her old school, is confronted with a totally different environment. She feels out of place until Arriane and Penn become her friends. So far so good if she only didn't fall in love with Daniel. The most handsome boy she has ever met. He keeps on sending her mixed signals and this makes it worse. Then there's this feeling. This strange notion they have met before. They somehow were together before. Cam, on the other side, is a fascinating boy, who seems to be pretty interested in Luce. The two boys have one thing in common: a dangerous and unbelievable secret that involves her.

The book started off slower than I thought. Although the reading isn’t so bad. It does capture your attention enough to keep going, although I’m not sure what the huge hype over this book is. That’s not to say that I did not like it, I thought it was an all right read, but not something to wow over. It’s worth sticking by it and reading it through.

I rather liked Luce. She’s got issues, but not enough to make her weepy or needy. She can stand up on her own (most of the time) although her mooning over Daniel was a little tedious. I couldn’t really see the chemistry going on between the two of them, even though Daniel was playing the hard to get game and being real nasty about it. Sure, he had reason to avoid Luce, but it would help to at least explain to her why that would be instead of blowing her off like an irritating bug. Even after I finished the book, I still didn’t really like Daniel. To me, he’s not even crush worthy material. Now Cam..on the other hand...yeeeahhhhhh *grinning* Like Luce, I thought Gabbe was the most annoying person ever. However, when you find out what she really is, it fits into place and you suddenly do a 360 and change your mind about her.

Now although the pace of the book was slow, and the plot was slow to evolve, the reading wasn’t so bad. I rather liked following Luce around with Arriane and Penn (I took a liking to Penn she was such a great supporting character). The pace does pick up a bit after the first half of the novel and the mystery gets a little more interesting. The whole explanation on who Daniel really is (among others) was interesting and did take the story on to a new light. It felt like a reward for putting up with the slow pacing and well, I’d have to say the ending really did make up for it and convinced me to pursue this series further.

Fallen might not be for everyone. The pacing of the plot may be slow and dry to some readers. Also there are just some parts that get a little out of hand when it comes to the cheesiness and romance. However, those that loved Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick should give this a try (however it might not be up to par). In my opinion, Daniel just could not be as great as Patch ;)

  • Fluff reading

Definitely not up to par. Had a hard time finishing it. The story was already incredible...but everyone in the school was an angel or a devil?? Come on..not even a teen read..

***NOTE MY REVIEWS OFTEN CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Luce Price has secrets in her past she doesn’t like to share with anyone, events she experienced that even she herself doesn’t understand. The latest horror in her life has landed her at the Sword & Cross reform school for crime she doesn’t know how she committed. She’s not even sure if she did commit the crime, the only thing she knows is that she feels responsible. Sword & Cross is the strangest boarding school she’s ever attended and there’s so much going on beneath the surface she doesn’t understand. The awful atmosphere of the school is only broken up by moments with the two very different friends she’s made – Penn and Arrianne and her interactions with the two guys who’ve gained her attention Cam and Daniel. Like her friends her love interests are as different as night and day and though the one is cold more than he’s hot her attention seems more like a power struggle between the two boys. As the shadows that have haunted her all her life draw in closer to her within the wall of the school Luce must discover the secrets within its wall before another unexplained disaster occurs.

I actually debated between two and three stars for this one. The only reason I decided to go with three stars is that both the prologue and the end scenes of the book were pretty interesting, even if the middle is kind of lacking. The final scenes come back enough to make you curious enough to want to read the next novel. Considering though many parts of this one I wondered if it was ever going to end I consider it quite a fete that this novel could at all leave me wanting to read more and deemed that alone earned it the three star rating. I realize this is one of the most popular series on the shelves today, however I’ll be honest I just don’t get it. The gorgeous cover images on these books may make you want to read them and love them but that doesn’t make the story any less confusing or make it drag any less than it does. Kate’s work is very similar to that of Alyson Noel, beyond the eerily similar plot, even in the fact that after you finish the story you still don’t really understand what’s going on. I consider myself a fairly intelligent person but I’m not a mind reader so since the writer didn’t really explain the purpose of anything happening in this novel, I’m pretty much clueless at its conclusion. That’s probably the reason I want to read more, because I don’t like not knowing or understanding what’s going on.

The plot is DEFINITELY slow paced, the pacing doesn’t pick up until the final chapters and most of what keeps you turning the pages in this novel is a constant state of confusion. I wouldn’t say it jumps around, just that it pretty much all makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. First of all even its beginnings are farfetched. Luce is sent to a reform school because circumstantial evidence holds her responsible for the death of a former crush. She outright admits she doesn’t totally remember what happened only the shadows closing in and Trevor bursting into flames. While I could easily see her being required to submit to psychiatric treatment after an event like that, she lists no evidence other than her being there. Just being the old witness, does not a guilty person make and I find it EXTREMELY difficult to believe she could be convicted and sentenced to reform school on circumstantial evidence alone. The fact that this scene is told about rather than shown makes it that much more confusing. So we’re faced with a female lead who appears to have mental issues wrongly convicted and sentenced for a crime she didn’t commit. I find the whole set up farfetched to say the least.

While it is later proven her shadows are real, and she isn’t in fact crazy, for the most part other than her constantly seeing shadows, the bulk of this novel is a boring account of life at a reform school.

The characters were under developed and for the most part hard to relate to because you’re never quite sure until the end of the book if this main character isn’t a little unbalanced. And of course we can’t forget the ever popular love triangle. Luce spends most of the book torn between a guy who barely pays attention to her other than to be mean and a guy who clearly adores her. OBVIOUSLY the jerk is her one true love. Of course.

The last not quite quarter of the book the story finally picks up and starts bringing in all the paranormal factions that place it firmly within the paranormal genre. The problem is most of the stuff is only half explained and the world she introduces us to comes across as incredibly underdeveloped because she doesn’t really bother to explain much of anything.

Am I curious enough to read the next book in the series? Yes, the ending made me want to know more, I want the explanations of what’s going on just as much as Luce does. Would I recommend this book? No. I want to read more of the series because there are too many questions I want answers to. I wouldn’t recommend a book that uses confusion as its main hook to other readers in any way, shape, or form. But then again based on the popularity of this series I’m clearly the minority, as I said above, I don’t get it.
