“EVERY WAR HAS turning points and every person too.”

Fifteen-year-old Daisy is sent from Manhattan to England to visit her aunt and cousins she’s never met: three boys near her age, and their little sister. Her aunt goes away on business soon after Daisy arrives. The next day bombs go off as London is attacked and occupied by an unnamed enemy.

As power fails, and systems fail, the farm becomes more isolated. Despite the war, it’s a kind of Eden, with no adults in charge and no rules, a place where Daisy’s uncanny bond with her cousins grows into something rare and extraordinary. But the war is everywhere, and Daisy and her cousins must lead each other into a world that is unknown in the scariest, most elemental way.

A riveting and astonishing story.

This book reminded me of a recurring nightmare that I had as child when I was running and hiding in the woods from some unknown enemy. Set "slightly in the future" during a world-wide war, a family of children are left to survive on their own when their mother leaves for some unknown reason probably related to the war. It did keep my attention and at times I was fairly riveted to the page. Not the best I've ever read, but certainly not the worst.

2005 Michael L Printz Award BookI have a love-hate relationship with this book. I thought it was very well written, however, I will be very surprised if a lot of teenagers read it and like it. There were times when I wanted to put it down and not finish it at all. I did like the ending. I think it might make a good discussion book, however, I would have a really hard time trying to sell a book I didn't entirely like.
