  A man is found wandering in the desert, his memory of the past twenty years shot to hell. Suddenly he is faced with a wife (who is she??), a dog (thank god for canine acceptance of who you are for who you are) and a gaping hole in his experience. He ditches his wife, his past life and goes in search of a solution - any solution - which brings him to an evil experimental doctor who transplants memories from one brain to another. Sci-fi with a literary twist. The book was enjoyable but did not blow me away as ' The History of Love' did. I guess a first novel is excused as a practice piece...

Interesting concept but with a strange twist when he gets mixed up in some "memory experiment" that I never believed. Interesting thoughts though on who we are and how we become who we are...and if we had no memory who would we be?

  I figured out the plot relatively early in the story, and had it confirmed by my friend who lent it to me: the main character gets complete and unrelenting amnesia, and eventually has a memory transplant, which gives him back a life. A life, not his life. Interesting enough. Sounds more sci-fi than ... (continue)

  I figured out the plot relatively early in the story, and had it confirmed by my friend who lent it to me: the main character gets complete and unrelenting amnesia, and eventually has a memory transplant, which gives him back a life. A life, not his life. Interesting enough. Sounds more sci-fi than anything else, but this is serious fiction, and serious fiction suffers when the story gets lost in the prose. And that's exactly what happened here.
