Two and a half stars.
Crichton has a lot of great ideas, which often clearly derive from a very solid scientific knowledge.
Unfortunately, this book slowly transforms into the quite predictable script for an average action movie - the unlikely hero versus all the rest (the protagonist's initial claim for solidarity is bound to be left behind as the situation gets hotter: the hero is always alone when real danger comes), the more and more fast-paced action, and the salvation which will come only when the time is almost up.
The spaceship from the future was very fascinating, though. And I appreciated the decision to keep the mystery around the sphere, an object / entity whose origins, aims and essence remain unknown.
