  • She said that with a girl like Mary Elizabeth, you shouldn't tell her she looks pretty. You should tell her how nice her outfit is becuase her outfit is her choice whereas her face isn't.

  • stunning in its simplicity

the only review i read before approaching this book said it was a "new catcher in the rye".
    not really.

the only review i read before approaching this book said it was a "new catcher in the rye".
    not really.
sure, the Salinger masterpiece is evidently an inspiration, but this book is something different, and modern.

it goes by quickly, it's incredibly straight forward and effective but never gross. it makes us see the world through the eyes of a troubled teenager who is absolutely disarming in his accurate and true analysis of the world around him. and in the end, we find out that we're all troubled in some way or another, and we find an unrxpected consolation Un discovering that we're not the only one wondering of some oddities if the world we live in.

when you get to the end of the book you KNOW that "each person is unique and special", but the path that led you to really acknowledge that is so weird that there's nothing cheesy or banal in this conclusion. actually it's a bright, deeply meaningful realization.
