Disappointing
The decent setting and setup is way too similar to a million haunted house movies you have seen. The suspense ruined by jumps in POV and annoying omniscient narrator. The bad guy has no motivation or logic beyond its supreme evilness. I sure hope Zafon improved in later books to justify his fame.

Being a huge fan of his other two books: The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game I also wanted to read this one even though I knew it was one of his earlier writings, directed to a younger audience and before his more well known novels.
Not a bad book at all though. Fast and easy to read. It still captures the dark & gloomy mood I like about his books but it lacks the expressive and emotional feel of his later works
