It's all about building up to a crescendo.
One of the biggest gripes of WoT fans such as myself is series bogged down in books 8-11 mostly. But our wishes have been answered as Gathering Storm & even more Towers Of Midnight wrap up alot of plot points. A literary equivalent of clearing the decks for the upcoming final book.
