Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that?

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

I really enjoyed this book, I had to read just this book of the series for a class and enjoyed it so much that I read the others. I really got engrossed in the book and didn't want to put it down, it is a really interesting story and an interesting concept to think about. Is this where our world is headed? There is such an importance placed upon physical beauty and technology and this book shows a scary future for us in respect to those two ideas.
The only thing I disliked was that I wanted to know more about how the world came to be that way. I wanted more of the back story because it was intriguing.
I, and I think most people too, can relate to feeling like an "ugly" at that awkward age between child and teen years. I also connected with Tally's character in that I long to be prettier-thinner, more stylish, etc. The book kind of reminded me of "The Hunger Games" with the all-seeing, controlling government and of course it being a post apocalyptic world.
I would like to integrate this novel into my classroom in a Dystopian unit, probably as a companion novel to "The Hunger Games." I think I would like to do a "book-in-a-day" assignment with it to go along with "The Hunger Games."

  • Would you want to live in a world free from prejudices, a world where everyone looks pretty and everyone is equal? Would you really?

The idea Westerfeld brings to YA literature is interesting--if everyone were beautiful and happy would the world be a better place? Hmmm....Questions (potential spoilers)1. Which character could you relate to more, Shay or Tally? Why?2. What do you think of the idea of becoming pretty at the age of sixteen? Do you think this would really make life better? Explain.3. At the end of the story would you have done the same thing Tally did? If not what would you have done? Explain.4. What are your predictions for the next book Pretties?
